I don't know squat about servers either but I know I want one of these. Servers are supposed to be low-latency machines so I figure this'd be awesome for gaming.
Let's see....$3500 for a 23" Cinema HD Display....$3000 for a 1 GHz single G4 XServe....possibly $130 for Mac OS X (assuming that Mac OS X Server is not compatible with plain Mac OS X applications)....lots of $$$ for 2 GB DDR RAM....and $25 bucks for UT....totals to....lots of money.  -- aran[MA]=Omega=: Wait there. it looks great, i'm glad to see it coming out.
but there is much room for improvement. no raid 5, software raid only, no scsi built in, no ADM (for hard drive expansion) no upgrade from single to dual cpu (i'd never want to, but...) check out macintouch.com/xserve.html i hope they stand by this and make some o these changes. it would beat having a linux or unix box around by far. |
