I've been trying to spread this around. I didn't realize there were still so many people having this problem. Anyway, this seemed to be another good place to post it.

I've found the following settings will get rid of black grenade boxes in UT X and OS 9 OpenGL modes.

First, set yourself to 16-bit color and medium textures.
Then, make sure your UnrealTournament.ini file looks like this in the OpenGL section:

[OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]
Translucency=True
VolumetricLighting=False
ShinySurfaces=False
Coronas=True
HighDetailActors=False
MinLogTextureSize=0
MaxLogTextureSize=10
MaxLogUOverV=10
MaxLogVOverU=10
UseMultiTexture=1
Texture32Bit=0
DoPrecache=0
DescFlags=0
Description=

I believe it's the HighDetailActors=False that does it but I wanted to include everything. BTW, the volumetriclighting=False turns off fog and helps your visibility, but obviously makes for less "ambiance".
