Open GL trouble |
Lead | |
|
I have a G4 with a geforce 3 in it. I am still stuck using RAVE because i can't figure out how to use OpenGL. If someone can tell me how to do it or give me a link that has good instructions, that would be great.
Thanks! |

Re: Open GL trouble | ||

With earlier versions you had to do a separate install from the CD but I don't think that is the case with 436 or GOTY; it wasn't for me anyway. You then need to tell UT to use Open GL instead. Personally I did this by editing the ini file.
i.e. GameRenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice However, you'll also need to add a couple of lines to the [OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice] section of the file when used on the GeForce 2 or you'll most likely get an error along the lines of 'minlog maxlog texture size'. I assume the same is true for the GF3. Anyway, this is how mine reads: [OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice] Translucency=True VolumetricLighting=True ShinySurfaces=True Coronas=True HighDetailActors=True DetailTextures=True MinLogTextureSize=0 MaxLogTextureSize=10 MaxLogUOverV=10 MaxLogVOverU=10 UseMultiTexture=1 TextureComposite=True Texture32Bit=0 Use32bit=1 DoPrecache=0 DescFlags=0 Description= |

zzzzzz : Ive already tried to install it and it hasnt worked. If you dont have anything helpful to say dont say it at all. Thanks.
BettyBlue: My game is version 400 but i have the 436 patch. Does this mean i have to do a separate install from the CD? What exactly does that mean? Also, i tried what you said, and right as it finishes starting up and is about to enter the game, it quits and says an error type 2 has occured. Is there supposed to be something after Description= ? there isnt anything where you put it in your post, so im just curious. Thanks for the help so far thow |

Y do u want slower frame rates??? | ||
|
that is what u will get with open gl...
btw do yourself a favor and install 436 AFTER a FULL install off the disk, then you will not need the disk in. if anything that is biggest reason to install 436.... sorry to give u so much grief, but this topic seems to come up every 6 weeks.... getting tired of it thats all zZzZzZzZzZzZz |

hmm | ||

So your saying that Open GL will run slower than RAVE? that seems odd.. because rave doesnt run too well in my game.
also, i did install 436 after i fully installed ut off the disk, and i dont have the disc in my computer. |

Three things I'd like to point out...
::1 zZzZ, seeing as you're not even a registered user of this forum don't speak as if you represent the whole board. Yes, some question do come up again and again but that's no reason to be rude. ::2 It is true that UT was never 'optimized' for OpenGL but it does work ::3 iam skyline, from what I've seen on my GF 2MX Open GL is certainly faster than Rave. I just recently went over to Open GL on my setup because I swapped out a Voodoo 5500 card. -- In any case, zZzZ is right in that you will want to do a full install and then patch straight to 436. You don't have to do a separate install, the 436 patcher will update your existing installation. However, you will have to have the UT CD in your drive as the patcher copies some files; if memory serves me. As for the ini editing, no, there shouldn't be anything after description. I've seen some other reports of thew type 2 error but I never got it so I'm not sure what triggers that. One suggestion may be to up the memory allocated to UT. The initial Open GL installer readme did mention that you would have to allocated significantly more memory to UT in order to get Open GL going. FYI, I've given UT an allocation of 210MB. For other tweaks check out the help pages and especially the commented ini file available from the main page. I could also mail you my ini file. |

memory | ||

i dont think memory is a problem.. there is 1.25 gigs of it my computer. I have it set at about 400 megs .. so it should be ok.
I still cant figure it out.. so if you could email me your ini that would be awesome. My adress is: woa_m_shocka@yahoo.com Thanks! also, i noticed that there are 2 UnrealTournament.ini files, one in the main folder and the other in the system.. they should be identical, right? |

I had trouble getting to run also. Here is what worked for me. YMMV...
1) Clean Full install from CD. 2) Immediately did the OpenGL install from the Extras folder. 3) Edited the INI file 4) Confirmed that the OpenGL was working by running the game. 5) Installed 436 and then the bonus packs. Good to go. In VALENs Name I Frag Thee

Sean: Up to 4 i did the same as you. However, when i go to open UT for the first time, it askes for me to pick between RAVE and Software Rendering. Those are the only 2 options it gives me... any ideas?

1) What OS are you using?
2) Do you have all the required Nvidia and OpenGL extensions (if using 9.xx) 3) Can you run other OpenGL dependent games? In VALENs Name I Frag Thee

Re: ok.. | ||

I never got Open GL to show up in the menu for choosing rendering system. If the ATI Open GL extension is present you may want to try removing that since you're using a nVidia card. I didn't have to do the OpenGL install but like Sean says YMMV...

Sean: 1) I'm using 9.2.1
2) Not quite sure what you mean by all extensions 3) Dunno any other OpenGL games. Betty: I'm not really sure what you mean about ATI Open GL extension. Also, when you say u never got it to show up, do you mean that you selected something else? (rave, etc) Sorry for all the questions but thanks for the help. |

Re: . | ||

Sorry if I wasn't clear...
As Sean said, you should have 6 nVidia extensions (System Folder:Extensions). I believe the current version should be 2.3 for all of them. NVIDIA 2D Acceleration NVIDIA Driver NVIDIA DVD Accelerator NVIDIA Engine NVIDIA OpenGL NVIDIA Video Accelerator Likewise, you should have 6 OpenGL extensions at version 1.2.2. OpenGLEngine OpenGLLibrary OpenGLMemory OpenGLRenderer OpenGLUtility and OpenGLRendererATI That's the one that you could try removing to see if it will allow UT to offer OpenGL in the menu. What I did since it didn't show was to just select Rave or Software (can't remember |

Betty: Im not quite sure about what you mean with the Systemfolder:extensions.. I looked in my system folder and didnt see anything called extensions.. maybe thats the problem?
|

BettyBlue UT |
Re: hmm | ||
|
Surely there must be an "Extensions" folder inside your "System Folder" folder. If you have a new Mac that came with OS X installed make sure you're not looking in the "System" folder.
Once there, you don't have to delete the "OpenGLRendererATI" extension. Just move it to somewhere outside the "Extensions" folder and restart. That way you can put it back easily in case you need to. |

lol.. Betty I did what you said and disabled the ATI thing, and OpenGL works! Only problem is, the RAVE ran better! haha... any ideas why opengl isnt running as good as rave?
thanks! |

Re: lol | ||

LOL
That's great! As to why Rave would be faster than OpenGL I don't know... From what I've read and my experience nVidia's OpenGL drivers should be better than Rave. One thing I did find was that OpenGL actually seemed to perform better on higher resolutions; ie go to 1024x768 or above. Other than that, did you have a look at Eko's commented ini file? I do find that OpenGL looks nicer than Rave though even if that's a very subjective test. |

someone in my clan said maybe i should get a new driver .. any ideas?

Re: drivers | ||
|
Nope, that's wrong... if you have the version 2.3 drivers those are the latest. You should have those since you're on Mac OS 9.2.1. If you are unsure, select one of the extension and use Get Info (command - i) to see what version you have.
Apple is presently the only source for Mac GeForce drivers. |
